SOFTWARE CONSULTANCY
Services > Discovery & Strategy > Software Consultancy
The most expensive technology decisions are the ones made without the right advice.
Most organisations that come to us with a failed or failing software project share one thing in common: they committed to building something before they fully understood the problem. A supplier told them what they needed. An internal champion pushed a solution before the constraints were properly understood. A board approved a budget based on an estimate that turned out to be a guess.
Software consultancy is the work that prevents that. It's the structured, independent thinking that happens before a line of code is written — and sometimes the work that untangles what's gone wrong after it has.
We've been providing software consultancy to regulated and operationally complex businesses across the UK and Ireland since 2008. We don't have a product to sell you. We don't have a platform we're incentivised to recommend. Our only interest is giving you an honest picture of where you are, what your options are, and what we would do in your position.
Why Scaffold?
We are not a generalist advisory firm. We are a software consultancy that also builds software — which means our advice is grounded in the reality of what it actually takes to design, build, and operate complex systems, not in theory.
Over eighteen years we've worked in manufacturing, logistics and transport, regulated trade, testing laboratories, public sector, and professional services. We understand the operational constraints that shape technology decisions in those environments. We understand what a government API integration actually involves. We understand the difference between a system that works in a demo and one that works on a Tuesday morning when something goes wrong.
That domain knowledge is what makes our consultancy different. We've seen the problems you're describing. We know what they usually mean, and we know what they usually cost to fix.

What software consultancy means in practice
-
Sometimes the problem isn't technical knowledge — it's that everyone involved in the decision has a stake in the outcome. An internal team advocating for a rebuild. A supplier quoting for work they'd benefit from. A board that needs to approve a budget but doesn't have the expertise to challenge what's in front of them. We provide independent technology advisory for organisations that need a second opinion before committing. We assess the options, challenge the assumptions, and give you a view that isn't shaped by who wins the contract.
-
A new CTO, a business acquisition, a departing development team, a supplier relationship that has ended badly. Situations where the technology exists but the understanding of it doesn't — and decisions need to be made about what to do next. We conduct structured assessments of inherited technology environments: what exists, what it does, what it costs to maintain, what the risk profile looks like, and what the realistic options are. You get a clear picture before you commit to any path forward.
-
Missed milestones. A system that doesn't do what it was supposed to. A development relationship that has broken down. A go-live that failed. We conduct post-incident reviews and project recovery assessments for organisations that need to understand what happened, recover what they can, and make a decision about how to proceed. This is detailed, forensic work — and it's work most suppliers are reluctant to do because the findings are uncomfortable. We do it because honest answers are the only useful ones.
-
Many technology strategies are built by people who understand technology but not the business, or by people who understand the business but not the technology. The result is a document that sits on a shelf. We work with leadership teams to develop technology strategies grounded in operational reality — what the business needs to do, what the current technology can and can't support, and what a realistic, sequenced roadmap looks like. Not a vision document. A plan.
-
For businesses that don't have a CTO or technical director, or where that person is stretched across too many priorities, we provide fractional technology leadership. Senior technical judgment applied to the decisions that need it — without the cost or commitment of a full-time hire.

Not sure if consultancy
is what you need?
If you have a specific system to assess, a Technical Audit is the right starting point. If you have a problem to solve but no solution yet, Discovery & Strategy is where we begin. If you have a failing or inherited codebase, Software Rescue or Legacy System Modernisation may be closer to what you need.
The right engagement depends on the problem. If you're not sure which applies, tell us what's happening and we'll tell you honestly what we think.
